assignment #9 - cole knight - give peace a chance

No. Call me an ideologue, but war is never okay. I did relatively extensive research for a debate
resolution last June on the topic of civil war, even as a response to extreme brutality (which I think is the
most justifiable form of warfare), and the conclusion I reached was essentially that where oppression
exists alongside violence, the addition of violence only prefigures more oppression. I believe that the two
go hand-in-hand and that one would be hard pressed to find an example of oppression that didn’t entail
violence or vice-versa. Using violent means to minimize, or even reduce, oppression seems pretty
counter-intuitive to me. I also reached a conclusion that societies that are born of violence are far more
likely to be violent and oppressive themselves. Take, for example, the French, whose violent revolution
was succeeded by the brutal and imperial reign of Napoleon. Countless other examples prove just this
point. As far as I am concerned, peaceful methods (protest, diplomacy, etc.) are the only ways to truly
put an end to this worldwide cycle of violence. And, yes, that even includes the inevitable proletariat
uprising.
