Assignment #5: Hannah Qazi - Television: A Luxury Disguised As A Necessity

After exercising my brain for eight straight hours a day, seven times a week, I need a break. I've found that the best relaxation technique, which requires no brain power whatsoever, comes in the form of a red screen with bold and bright white letters. It is in these moments that I can dissociate from my daily life and allow myself to live vicariously through the brilliant contestants of the Great British Baking Show, anxious to see if my favorite contestant's creation is indeed, under proofed with a "soggy bottom." However, television has simultaneously created issues for me, subconsciously shaping my perception of beauty and exposing me to excessive violence and profanity at an unreasonably young age. It's a corrupting luxury that has disguised itself as a necessity in the lives of many, and without it I'm sure our quality of life would substantially improve, eliminating America's obesity epidemic, as well as the alarming amount of eating disorders created by it.
