I’m one of the youngest juniors here that hasn’t skipped a grade. I turn 16 on September 22nd. As a math nerd, I tend to excel in math- and science- oriented classes and struggle through English classes. Every year, I wade slowly through the mountains of essays in my English and History classes. I’ve never really held any hopes of improving my miserable writing skills, but I hope this year will be different. When I’m not doing homework, I’m usually spending time with my church youth group, playing the clarinet in the church orchestra, or babysitting my younger brother and sister. In my free time I like to bake for my family and youth group and try to improve my pie recipes. Other than that, there’s not much to know about little ol’ me.
While my summers are never very interesting, this one was particularly dull. Last summer, I got to spend a week at the beach (this seems like a normal annual family vacation, but this was the first time for my family). But this summer, I spent a lot of time helping my sister, Jess, prepare to move to college. She just moved out last weekend and everything feels weird without her around. The most interesting event of my summer was probably the annual Ultimate Octopus game with my youth group. Yes, we play Ultimate Frisbee with a real dead octopus every year at the end of summer. (I have proof: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1MFWLdguf6/?igshid=ljyx0sfj6qts)
I always hate icebreakers because they ask me seemingly foolish questions that have nothing to do with real life. I also never really have a good answer or a good explanation. When asked an interesting thing about me, I end up freaking out, having no idea what to answer. I never seem to learn anything important about anyone from an icebreaker other than their name and it just seems like a waste of my time. I would much rather have a meaningful conversation with one person in a room than learn meaningless facts about 50 people.
Every holiday weekend, my family drives to Indiana to visit my grandparents. In fact, since it’s Labor Day weekend, I’m there now, at my mom’s parent’s farm in nowhere-ville, central Indiana. To some people, a farm in the middle of nowhere would be a nightmare, but to me, it’s a safe haven. There, I can escape from all my homework and social media’s image of perfection.
Other than baking, I spend a lot of time on YouTube. I watch a lot of videos surrounding Harry Potter, Marvel, Disney, and Pixar. I also watch a lot of random educational videos that discuss a range of topics, from international flight laws to how bar codes are read. Here’s my favorite of these channels: https://www.youtube.com/halfasinteresting
Here’s the birthday cake I made for my mom last year. Please don’t judge too harshly, I’m not a professional.
